he good: The Nokia N82 features a 5-megapixel camera that produces high-quality photos and videos. The Symbian smartphone also has integrated Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, and good call quality.
he Nokia N82 is just the latest model to come across our desk, and like the rest of the bunch, it's quite impressive. It has a feature set similar to the with a couple of additions and omissions. Like the N95, the N82 has a 5-megapixel camera but it also includes a Xenon flash that makes a world of difference, as it produced amazing photos and videos. The Symbian smartphone continues to offer Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS, and it's a solid performer to boot. With all that going for it, it's really a bummer that the N82 has such a horrible design. The hardware feels a bit cheap, and the navigation buttons leave much to be desired. We're also disappointed by the lack of U.S. 3G support. All that said, you can work around the design flaws, and if your main focus is getting a high-end multimedia smartphone, the Nokia N82 fits the bill. An unlocked version of the Nokia N82 is available through Nokia's Web site for $564, though you can probably find it for a bit cheaper with a little online shopping research.
Design
We're just going to come right and say it: we're not huge fans of the Nokia N82's design. At first glance, the candybar style phone looks attractive enough with its silver face, and it's fairly compact at 4.4 inches tall by 1.9 inches wide by 0.6 inch deep and 4 ounces. However, the hardware just feels a bit cheap and plasticky.
The worst offender, though, may be the navigation controls and alphanumeric dialpad. The number keys are tiny little slivers that are even difficult for my small hands. Plus, they're not very comfortable, so text messaging wasn't very pleasant. You also get the standard navigation array of two soft keys, Talk and End buttons, shortcuts to the main and multimedia menus, a clear button, and a navigation toggle. However, the multimedia key is like the number buttons, and it was hard to press just the center OK button without moving the rest of the toggle.
The N82 features a 2.4-inch nontouch display that shows 16.7 million colors at a 320x240 pixel resolution, making for quite a pleasant viewing experience. There's also an ambient light detector to automatically adjust the brightness of the screen based on your current environment, so screen visibility was quite good. For personalization, you can add various background images and themes and adjust the font size.
On the right spine, you'll find two speakers (at the top and bottom), a volume rocker, a shortcut to your photo gallery, and a camera activation/capture button. Meanwhile, there's a micro USB port, a microSD expansion slot, and a power connector port on the left side. We would have preferred a mini USB port since that's more of a standard right now. There is a power button and a 3.5mm headphone jack on top of the unit. Finally, the camera lens and flash are located on the back, and the lens is protected by a sliding cover.
The Nokia N82 comes packaged with an AC adapter, a USB cable, video-out cables, a 2GB microSD card, a wired headset, a software CD, and reference material. For more add-ons, please check our
Features
As with all N series smartphones, the Nokia N82 is a multimedia powerhouse, though there's a bit more focus on the imaging aspect. Like the Nokia N95, it's equipped with a 5-megapixel camera with optics, a Xenon flash, and up to 10x digital zoom (4x for VGA). The amount of editing options and settings on the N series phones surpass those of any smartphone we've tested recently. For still images, there are five image qualities, eight scene modes, and five color tone options. There are also controls for white balance, exposure, sharpness, contrast, and light sensitivity.
The N82 can capture video at a maximum VGA resolution (640x480) at 30 frames per second, and there's a video stabilization functionality to reduce any camera shakes. As usual, you get less options in video mode, but you still have five video qualities, two scene modes, and white balance and color tone settings. Once done with photos and videos, you can upload them directly to your blog or the Web or send them via multimedia message or e-mail. There's about 100MB of internal memory and a microSD expansion slot for storing all your photos and videos, and other multimedia files.
We have to say was absolutely impressive. It may be the addition of the Xenon flash, but the N82 produced better photos than the Nokia N95; images were extremely sharp but we were mostly happy that the colors actually looked true to life. Video quality was also great.
If you'd like to watch other videos, you can use RealPlayer to check out 3GPP and MPEG-4 files. For some ear snacks, the integrated music player supports MP3, WMA, W4A, AAC, AAC+, and eAAC+ files, as well as OMA DRM 2.0- and WM DRM-protected songs. The music library categorizes tracks by artists, albums, genres, and composers; you can also create playlists right on the phone and adjust the sound with the built-in equalizer. You can listen to your favorite podcasts using the N81, and there's an FM radio. Just be aware that the latter requires the use of the included headset since it acts as the tuner. The N82 also works with Nokia's Ovi Internet services, which include the Nokia Music Store, N-gage games, and Nokia Maps.
Switching to voice features, the N82 offers quad-band world roaming, a speakerphone, speed dial, conference calling, voice-command support, a vibrate mode, and text and multimedia messaging. The phone's address book is only limited by the available memory (the SIM card holds an additional 250 contacts), and each entry can hold multiple phone numbers, work and home addresses, e-mail addresses, birthday, and more vitals. For caller ID purposes, you can assign each contact a photo, one of 34 ringtones, or a group ID.
Wireless options on the N82 include Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi, and GPS. The smartphone supports a number of Bluetooth profiles, including mono and stereo Bluetooth headsets, hands-free kits, dial-up networking, and file transfer. Sadly, the N82 does not support U.S. HSDPA bands (only the European 2100MHz band--boo), so you're stuck with EDGE. You do get integrated Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) as an alternative, and our review unit had no problem finding and connecting to our test access point. As with other N series phones, the N82 supports Universal Plug and Play, which lets you use a Wi-Fi connection to hook up with a compatible PC, printer, or home entertainment system, but the number of UPnP devices is limited at the moment.
If you're a bit directionally challenged, you might feel a little better knowing there's integrated GPS. Nokia Maps comes preloaded on the device, so you get color maps, route planning, and a healthy points-of-interest database. However, to get any kind of turn-by-turn directions, you'll have to download an upgrade to the device. There are several options for purchase, including a one-year license for $125.77 or a one-month license for $13.96.
Last but not least, the N82 runs the third edition of the S60 platform on the Symbian operating system for your productivity needs. An application called QuickOffice lets you view Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents, and it optimizes the pages for the phone's screen, so you don't have to scroll all over the place to read text. There are some nice shortcuts to jump to the top or bottom of the page to reduce the up-and-down scrolling, and there's also a search function.
However, if you want any editing capabilities, you'll have to upgrade the preloaded copy of QuickOffice. For messaging, the smartphone supports IMAP4, POP3, and SMTP e-mail accounts and comes with a full attachment viewer. The N82 works with a number of push e-mail solutions, as well as Microsoft Exchange Server synchronization, but this is dependent upon your service provider and company's e-mail solution, so check with your IT department if you have any questions. Other productivity applications and PIM tools include Adobe Reader, a Zip manager, a calculator, a notepad, a measurement converter, a clock, and a voice recorder.
Performance
We the quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900; GPRS/EDGE) Nokia N82 in San Francisco using service and call quality was good. We enjoyed clear sound without much background noise or voice distortion. We also had no problems using our bank's automated voice-response system. On the other end, friends were also impressed with the clarity. Audio took a bit of a hit in quality when we activated the speakerphone. There was some background hiss, but more than that, voices sounded a bit tinny. Finally, we were able to successfully pair the N82 with the Bluetooth headset and the
General performance was good. We found the N82 to be more responsive than the N95 with less of a delay when launching or switching between applications. Our patience did get tested a little when trying to browse Web sites using EDGE speeds and waiting for the phone to get a GPS fix. It took about 7 minutes for the N82 to get a lock on our location, and it took a while for maps to redraw as we moved about town. Multimedia performance was good. Music sounded decent through the phone's speakers, though a bit one sided. Thanks to the 3.5mm headphone jack, we were able to enjoy better audio with our earbuds. Admittedly though, we missed having the dedicated media buttons that the N95 has. Videos looked fairly clear with some slight pixelation, but picture and sound were always synchronized.
The Nokia N82's 1,050 mAh lithium ion battery has a rated talk time of 4.3 hours and up to 9 days of standby time. In our, we were able to get 5.5 hours of continuous talk time on a single charge. According to , the N82 has a digital SAR rating of 0.78 watt per kilogram.
SGX X830
Samsung are definitely capable of placing some extraordinary goods on the market, as they have proven again lately with the Samsung K5 MP3 player, fully operational by touch screen, and the Samsung i7 digital camera with its swivel screen. Also the announcements they made at the 3GSM in Barcelona caused a stir within the mobile telephone market. I have received a Samsung SGH-X830 sample for testing; a mobile phone aiming entirely at the MP3 player lovers! Extremely small, 1GB internal memory and a jog dial are just a few features on the Samsung X830. An additional and very special characteristic of the Samsung SGH-X830 is the arrangement of the buttons; however, I will come to tell you that later. No matter how small the Samsung X830 is, Samsung managed to equip it with a digital camera containing a resolution of 1.3 Megapixels. You can read how well the Samsung X830 has performed in practise in the Samsung SGH-X830 review.
Samsung SGH-X830 - Design
The Samsung X830's design is certainly very special. When taking the mobile phone in your hands for the first time, you'd think it was an MP3 player. The front of the telephone contains a jog dial for scrolling through the menu and in the centre a confirmation button is placed. To the left side of the telephone, you'll find the connection for the head set and some silver coloured volume buttons. The right side of the telephone contains the buttons with which you can operate the inbuilt digital camera. The Samsung X830 has a so-called swivel design; you have to swivel it to open it. It is very beautiful but I do get the feeling that the swivel is placed on the wrong side of the telephone. It simply doesn't feel right to open it the way it opens now.

Samsung SGH-X830 - Menu
The menu is arranged differently than normally because of the telephone's extremely small size. In stead of three icons side by side, Samsung chose to put two icons side by side on the Samsung X830. Scrolling through the menu is very easy and quick once you're used to the jog dial. In the beginning you'd pass a setting or you'd touch the jog dial accidentally when trying to confirm a setting so you'd confirm the wrong one, but practice makes perfect! The menu is equipped with comprehensible icons, together with a short clear explanation which ensures that even someone using the telephone for the first time, will find his way through the menu effortlessly.
Samsung X830 - Menu
Samsung SGH-X830 - Camera
The Samsung X830 is equipped with a 1.3 Megapixel digital camera. The camera's performance is reasonably okay. It is not the best camera in the world but certainly not the worst either. The colour reproduction is bright and lively. There is a small mirror on the back that lets you take self-portraits. It's a matter of trying to find the easiest way of holding the camera when taking pictures. Your fingers might cover the small lens all to easily, or just holding it with your finger tips makes the camera move and create blurred pictures for your grip is not too steady. You can also use the camera to record videos. A flash light however is lacking on the Samsung X830, which is a pity.
Samsung X830 - Camera
Samsung SGH-X830 - Interval of release
When starting up the camera, one may hope the subject one wants to capture is not too fast or it will have disappeared before the camera is actually turned on. Once the camera is ready to shoot and when you press the release button it still takes some seconds before the actual picture is taken. Unfortunately the Samsung X830's camera is not the only one with a slow start-up time and a shutter release lag. Even on equipment that is twice as expensive you will encounter these intervals. The technology simply isn't that developed yet to build in super fast image processors and buffers in cameras this size. The first digital cameras also suffered from interval of release but later on technology improved and nowadays capturing pictures have been made possible with hardly any interval.
Samsung X830 - Interval of release
Samsung SGH X830 - Camera settings
The camera of the Samsung SGH-X830 offers nice possibilities to adjust settings to your own preference and to improve pictures. It is possible to adjust the resolution as well as the ISO values and the white balance. The Samsung offers adjusting ISO sensitivity because of lacking a flash. This is very convenient because the light sensitivity gets higher, which improves taking pictures under dim light circumstances and trying to capture moving subjects (the shutter speed improves because of the higher light sensitivity). One disadvantage is that increasing ISO level, also increases digital noise

Samsung X830 - Transfer pictures
If you possess a Samsung SGH-X830, you have the possibility to make pictures a lot more interesting by using frames and effects. You can add all kinds of nice things to people, like glasses or put them in an Eskimo suit. But you can also place a nice frame around them. There is also the possibility of taking pictures in Black & White or in Sepia. After editing your pictures you can send them to other telephones via MMS or Bluetooth. All in all the Samsung X830 offers really nice functions to make the camera function of the Samsung X830 a lot more interesting.

Samsung SGH-X830 - Memory
The Samsung X830 has an internal memory of one Gigabyte. Not many telephones have been equipped with such a large internal memory so far. Of course this large capacity is meant for the consumer who is planning to use the MP3 function of the telephone to the full extent. Personally I regret the fact that the Samsung X830 doesn't offer the possibility to enhance the memory capacity by means of a microSD or a flash memory card. These cards are not too expensive nowadays, but there is still hope that Samsung will offer this possibility in the successor of the Samsung X830. The MP3 enthusiast will be able to keep a large part of his music collection on the Samsung X830. And of course your entire photo collection will fit on the Samsung X830's internal memory.
Samsung X830 - Memory
Samsung SGH-X830 - MP3 Player
Naturally the Samsung X830 has been equipped with an MP3 Player. Samsung definitely planned to emphasize on the MP3 player. And they did a great job. Because when the Samsung SGH-X830 is closed it doesn't look like a mobile phone at all. Nowadays you see more 'music phones' anyway, for example the W-editions (walkman editions) that Sony Ericsson put in the market. The MP3 player can also be used when the Samsung X830 is still closed. Just keep pressing the jog dial a bit longer than usually and the MP3 player will start up. The sound quality of the delivered head set is fine. The sound quality of the telephone's loud speaker is considerably poorer, but the telephone is extremely small and obviously Samsung had no more room to spare.
Samsung X830 - MP3 Player
Samsung X830 - Speech quality
Samsung SGH-X830 - Speech quality
The Samsung X830 definitely scores some points for speech quality. The voices sound good and the conversations come across clearly. The reception of the telephone is fine. Unfortunately I cannot compare the reception with other telephones at this moment because my provider has placed some extra antennas which have improved the reception of every telephone. When the head set is connected it also functions as hands free set. You can leave the telephone in your pocket and answer the call through the button on the cable of the head set. Also then the speech quality is of high quality.
It seems appropriate that I am writing about Samsung’s SGH-X830 just as the chat about Apple’s newly announced music playing iPhone reaches fever pitch. This phone is a combination of music player and Tri-band phone that is designed like no other combination of these two features I have ever seen.
The Samsung SGH-X830 looks more like a portable music player than a phone – it is tall, thin and undersized for a mobile – the dimensions are 84 x 30 x 19.9mm. It weighs 72g, which is less than any mobile I can remember seeing and supports MP3, ACC, ACC+, e-AAC+, WMA file formats.
My review sample came from O2 and has stunning white and silver casing. It is also available in pink and black. I will refrain from raging against those colours here, but read my latest editorial for a whinge.
The front fascia comprises a tall, thin screen – 19mm wide, 32mm tall and 128 x 220 pixels wide - and a wheel for navigation. This is all very music player like, and when you press and hold the navigation wheel’s central select button the music player springs into action and the display activates in wide format to show you what’s playing.
The navigation wheel’s centre button will now pause and resume playback, while pressing the wheel at the top opens the playlist, left and right skip back and forwards between tracks, and pressing the wheel at the bottom opens the music player controls and options. From here you can edit playlists, send files via Bluetooth, set a tune as a ringtone and configure the shuffle and repeat settings. Two buttons on the top edge of the handset let you control music volume.
When a call comes in the music player stops. If you take the call, at its end you can resume playback either by ending the call by moving from phone mode back into music player mode, in which case it resumes automatically, or by ending the call by pressing the ‘End Call’ button and then tapping a softmenu button to resume music playback.
So where is the End Call button and what is this ‘phone mode’ and ‘music player mode’? The answer is all in the swivel. The Samsung SGH-X830 is made in two sections, which pivot around the central select button in the navigation wheel. The pivoting action is spring loaded and feels very slick, though it only works in one direction and you’ll need to practice a bit to get the knack just right. Open the phone up and a two column numberpad is revealed.
This houses Call and End buttons, two softmenu buttons and a combined cancel and camera launch button. The navigation wheel turns into a scroll-or-click navigation button while its central select button becomes a Web browser shortcut. You can lock these keys with the only other side mounted button, marked ‘Hold’.
I found the two-column number pad easy to get used to, though if you are a frequent texter the very different alpha-key layout may prove quite painful at first.
Getting tunes onto the phone is achieved by download from the Web, Bluetooth transfer or from a PC either by synchronising with Windows Media Player or using Samsung’s PC Studio software. This is provided on a CD and accompanied by the necessary connection cable – USB at the PC end, proprietary at the Samsung SGH-X830 end.
It may have come out of the Samsung factory with a very dull name - the Samsung SGH-X830 - but this is probably one of the most interesting phones that we've seen this year.
It's a very distinctive handset to look at, measuring just 84x30x20mm and coming in at 72 grams. Then there's the Samsung X830's unusual 128x220 pixel display and a distinctive circular control pad (more of which later).
It's a rotator phone - the Samsung X830 has a narrow numeric keypad hidden behind it's narrow fascia, so it's much more conventional than the Nokia 7380. It also comes with a 1.3 megapixel camera and Bluetooth, and of course there's a multimedia player capable of playing MP3, AAC and WMA media formats. The SGH-X830 comes in a variety of colours - black, white, orange and pink. The pink version will be the first in many markets.
Internal memory is a huge 1Gb although there's no expansion slot, however 1Gb is probably enough for almost everyone. The Samsung X830 has a USB 2.0 connection, so this means that data can be transferred quickly enough to make it viable to transfer large amounts of data. Samsung say that up to 330 tracks (at 3Mb per file), although in our experience MP3 tracks are about 4Mb each and it's best to allow 64Mb per album, but even with our figures the Samsung X830 will hold 250 tracks or 15 albums.
The Samsung SGH-X830 has EDGE data support but as you'd expect it's just too tiny a phone for 3G or WiFi. There are all the usual features you'd expect to find too, such as PC synchronisation, Java and some PIM tools.
Let's look a little more deeply at that circular control pad - at first glance, it appears to be a rotator control (as with the iPod), but in fact it actually seems to be a conventional selector pad. The screenshots in Samsung's publicity photos indicate that the SGH-X830 is pretty conventional here, using screen prompts to guide the user to the relevant selector pad functions.
It does appear that Samsung have a winner with the SGH-X830. Although we've seen similar elements to the X830 in other handsets, this is the first time we've seen a such a stylish, compact and powerful multimedia device with all of these features.
Although it does look a little like the iPod, it really isn't quite the same as the long-rumoured "Apple iPhone", although Apple are probably kicking themselves now that the iPhone has taken so long to develop.
One last note about names - although this is officially the Samsung SGH-X830 device, the pink version of this handset will be sold in some markets as the "Samsung Blush" which is a much more memorable name and probably a smart move - after all, no-one tends to call the LG KG800 anything other than the "Chocolate".
Sources say that the Samsung X830 should be available from October 2006 in certain markets.

Competition in the smart phone market is on the increase recently as one new smart phone after other hits the market. Various companies are introducing mobiles with excellent features that captivate the mobile users. The mobile phones are becoming smaller in size though the features keep increasing. The T mobile is known for releasing such smart pones every year with improved technologies and enhancements.
A recent smart phone launched by the T mobile is ˜my touch 3G™.It uses the high speed data network. It is the second hand set of T mobile to feature Google powered android operating system. The ˜my touch 3G™ hand set is offered in vibrant colors including black, white and distinctive merlot. The mobile looks more admirable in its merlot color. Though this hand set is similar to the T mobile™s G1, there are certain features that differentiate it. The ˜my touch 3G™ mobile offers a deep level of customization. The users can personalize and customize the menus, wall papers, icons and a range of other things with the help of the themes and skins. This makes it unique from the iphone because it has a un customizable look.
While it is not always guaranteed that a newly released piece of kit will always be introduced in the APAC market first (usually, these new products will be introduced into the US market, still the biggest consumer group in the world even after the recent market slowdowns) – the Philippine’s proximity to said countries gives the possibility of back-channel access to products that are not officially released into the market yet. This is probably due to our proximity to the Hi-Tech Tigers of Asia – Korea and Japan and Taiwan, as well as the country with the biggest number of manufacturers – China. Such access usually happens if only for the reason of testing the waters for acceptance of a new product, or simply to gauge public reaction to it. In the case of services though, we can be confident that we are keeping up with the Jones’, in that Globe, a local communications company, has been offering HSDPA connectivity through their Globe Visibility service since March of 2006 – one of only a few Telecom companies offering this capability in the Asia Pacific. More recently, it was announced that both Smart Communications and its main competitor Globe will be offering television services to their subscribers. This brings me to the subject at hand, the Samsung SGH-P930. Samsung SGH-P930 - a little larger than life-size Why go such a long way around the topic you ask? Well you see, this particular Samsung phone is capable of displaying televised content through a new video standard for handhelds called DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting – Handhelds), which in turn can only function on networks that are capable of 3.5G speeds – such as Globe Visibility on the HSDPA technology – High Speed Downlink Packet Access. Without these prerequisites, the highly touted television-showing capability of the phone will be MIA, with no recourse other than to lug a regular old portable TV around, which is so 80’s. Can't call anyone with this sir. Pretty big screen though From the surface, all is well and good- Smart has already announced availability of the TV service to subscribers as recently as July of this year, and Globe, while still mute on their plans, can’t be too far behind. Yet a cursory peek at blogs and forums regarding the big two mobile service providers in the Philippine show that the service may not be ready for prime time. A good example of this movement of dissatisfaction can be found. All of these technologies – HSDPA, DVB-H, plus the problem of coverage, support by hardware, customer service and user friendliness – must be overcome before hardware like the SGH-P930 can be worth considering for its TV capabilities. The other half of the “leading edge” of technology is of course, the hardware. There is only a few handhelds I know of that has the prerequisite technology onboard to be compatible with the imminent release of TV on your cell phone. A recent confirmation came in the form of Smart Communication’s approval of the Nokia N92 for TV duties. Another cell phone that I know off is here in front of me, the Samsung SGH-P930. Hold a world of possibilities Design – wise, this Samsung shows its vintage by its 2.0 MP camera and the fact that it’s actually only a bit slimmer than a pack of cigarettes – a lot of newer and slimmer models from Samsung have since been introduced. I still very much appreciate the technology it represents though, and the build quality – it has a “heft” that is substantial rather than heavy. The swivel-style screen reflects its dual-purpose nature – that of a phone and a video-viewing device. The screen is very clear, with vibrant colors resulting from its 262k – color TFT Screen, which measures a healthy 2.3” @ 240x320. One complaint that cropped up during its testing period: the 5-way toggle had sharp edges and is difficult to manipulate. These are the most notable details of the phone – a more complete list of specifications follows below.
Another key point to be noted about the ˜my touch mobile™ is something called Sherpa. Sherpa is nothing but an application that claims to learn from the actions of the user. For instance, if the user is searching on a topic; the Sherpa recognizes your intention and provides more information related to it which you may need in future. Does it sound be unreal? The reality is this; the application has a built in learning engine which has the ability to customize itself based on the user™s preference. This application is created by geodilic and it learns the likes and dislikes of the users through feedbacks and behavior.
The ˜my touch mobile™ uses a virtual keyboard which is a replacement to the physical keyboard used by a G1 mobile. This makes it much smaller and compact than the G1 mobile. The android cup cake software used by the ˜my touch mobile™ gives a unique beautiful look. The memory is also increased when compared to the G1 Mobile. This enables the applications to load and run very smoothly.
Specifications of the ˜my touch mobile™:
o A 3.2 inch TFT LCD screen

SAMSUNG Launches a New Mobile TV Phone in Italy
Seoul Korea , November 22th, 2006 - Samsung launches a new mobile TV phone (model:SGH-P930) to the Italian market this month through Telecom Italia.

Kitae Lee, President of Samsung Electronics Telecommunication Network Business said, “Mobile TV will change the lifestyle of people and will be a big contributor in the future of an ubiquitous world.†He added, “Samsung will lead the worldwide mobile TV market by providing a variety of mobile TV phones with advanced features and premium design.
SWIVEL AND SLIDE
The P930’s unique slide and swivel mechanism allows for it to stand out in a crowd. Add that to the slick black finish with silver trimming and the P930 doesn’t fail to impress.

Now - the hardware is here, and the software (or infrastructure) is in the “Let’s roll-out” stage – all gung-ho and full of marketing piss-and-vinegar. Following multiple releases of TV-on-your-cell services around the world, it is now the local market’s turn. Hopefully problems - on multiple levels of the service – can be ironed out so that the adoption of this new technology (and the use of phones such as the Samsung SPH-P930) can be a smooth experience. Not everything is doom-and-gloom though – there was a time when texting was a hit-and-miss affair, while coverage was so spotty that there was still some merit in standing on top of your building’s water tank to get a better signal for your cell phone. Those days are long past now thankfully - perhaps the same process is being followed for the imminent introduction of TV services to our cell phones. HSDPA-enabled network - Globe's towers are taller Keeping up with the prevalently advanced tech in other countries is an admirable endeavor, but when it is accomplished at the cost of shoddy performance and half-hearted implementation, I’d rather stay a few months away from the bleeding edge – after all, it’s too easy to slip off and cut yourself on unproven technology compounded with untested services. Thankfully, the Samsung is definitely not bleeding edge – (how often can a hardware geek be glad to say that?) It was introduced in Italy November of 2006, and is already a proven performer. Newer TV-capable phones from Samsung have also been introduced. P.S.: Yet even after saying all that, I still find a certain amount of gleefulness that the Philippines is actually one of the countries leading the charge for a new technology – the same kind of feeling when I happened upon a report that Filipinos led the world in cell phone texting usage. What kind of gleefulness? I dunno, maybe the novel kind?
As with most of the “slider” type phones, the display screen dominate the model, although this is well complimented by the sleek design of the phone which is available in polished black, with stylish silver trim.. The keys themselves are housed under the top layer of the phone, and become visible when the slider action is utilised.
The keys blend very well with the phone colours, and are actually built into the casing of the phone. They are fairly sensitive to touch and easy to use in conjunction with your traditional navigation tilt button, and additional function keys. You will however soon realise that the screen display actually rotates horizontally or vertically for better viewing, which comes in useful for some of the other functions available (see below).
Perhaps the biggest selling point for the Samsung SGH P930 is the HSDPA high speed data transfer which works in conjunction with the DVB-H mobile standard to offer actual mobile TV on the move. The speed of data transfer is the key to this service, with in effect a broadband service on your mobile, something which handset manufacturers have been working on for some time - the “holy grail”.
low you to watch two TV stations at the same time! While the content for the mobile TV market may still be in its infancy, with phones like the Samsung SGH P930 around to push the cause, this will speed up the improvements required and quality content will soon be with us.
This will in turn force many of the other handset manufacturers to rush out their mobile TV offerings, thereby reducing the end cost to the consumer.
In addition the Samsung SGH P930 also offers a 2 megapixel inbuilt camera with 1600 x 1200 pixel focus for that sharp crisp shot. The standard photography and video options are available, with sufficient memory capability to store a significant number of your favourites, for easy play back. A useful multi-shot and night mode facility again increase the functionality of the Camera.
The mobile covers the following networks, HSDPA, UMTS, GSM 900 , GSM 1800 and GSM 1900 to give that all round exposure. One slight disappointment is the battery which while offering over 200 hours standby time, only allows 2 hours of talk time, which is probably not as disappointing as it first seems, bearing in mind the increased functionality of the phone.
The Samsung SGH P930 also offers your standard 1,000 record phone book, with the ability to store multiple details on each contact, e.g. email address, etc. There is over 20Mb of memory available,. with a memory port for additional capacity. As well as your traditional internet access, the Samsung SGH P930 also supports Bluetooth Technology together with numerous USB connection ports.
The task of transferring data has been made very simple, efficient and very quick - no more excuses for forgetting those all important appointments, etc. Add in the SMS and MMS messaging services available and you have a quality mobile office, perfect for the business person or personal user.
For those who need time to relax on the move, there are a number of JAVA games pre-installed, which are fairly addictive! The Samsung SGH P930 also supports the MP3, AAC, AAC+ and WMA audio facilities, with built in stereo speakers giving that all round sound experience.
It looks as though the Samsung SGH P930 will be leading Samsung into a new phase of mobile technology, and they have stolen a march on many of their competitors with this quality offering.

Samsung has had mixed results with touch-screen phones with full keyboards. Verizon's had its share of faults, but we liked the for AT&T quite a bit. Fortunately, the new Samsung Rogue for is no slouch. Not only is it a touch-screen and keyboard combo handset, but also it boasts an absolute gorgeous AMOLED display, a 3.5mm headset jack, and voice dialing. It also has plenty of high-end features, like a HTML browser with Flash Lite support, GPS, EV-DO Rev. A, and more. The Samsung Rogue is available for $99.99 after a two-year service agreement and a $100 mail-in rebate, which is quite affordable. Do note however, that the Rogue is one of a few non-smartphones from Verizon to require a data plan--either $9.99 for 25MB a month or $19.99 for 75MB a month.
Design
Though the Impression and the Rogue share the same basic design, they're not exactly alike. Measuring 4.29 inches long by 2.17 inches wide by 0.65 inch thick, the Rogue is slightly shorter and thicker and is a tad boxier around the edges. It's lighter at 4.94 ounces, but has a nice heft when held in the hand. The Rogue also has a nice textured battery cover that provides additional grip to the phone, and the bronze-and-silver color scheme gives it a sophisticated look.
The Rogue's most impressive characteristic, however, is definitely the 3.1-inch AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) display. It is simply gorgeous, though it suffers a little under direct sunlight. With support for 262,000 colors and a 480x800 pixel resolution screen, colors look vibrant, images are bright, and text is tack sharp. You can adjust the backlight, the dial font size, the menu font style, the clock format on the home screen, and the transition effect between menus. The touch screen interface is quite intuitive and easy to use as well. There's a touch calibration wizard setting so you can fine-tune the responsiveness. We like that the screen has vibrating feedback--you can even adjust the length and intensity of the vibrations. The Rogue supports Samsung's TouchWiz interface, which offers a collapsible toolbar with shortcut widgets. Some of the more useful widgets include one-touch access to social media sites like Facebook, YouTube, MySpace, and Twitter.
On the bottom row of the home screen are four shortcut icons that lead to the phone dialer, the contacts menu, the messaging menu, and the main menu. The phone dialer has a big number keypad with virtual keys, a shortcut to the contacts menu, groups, and favorites. You also can choose to type out a text message with this virtual keypad layout--just select new text message in the messaging menu while the phone is closed. Though it doesn't make too much sense to use this interface when the phone has a full keyboard, we can see how it would be useful if you only have one hand free to send a text.
You're not just stuck with virtual controls; there are physical keys as well. Beneath the display are the Send, Clear, and End/Power keys, while the volume rocker and charger jack are on the left spine. On the right spine are a screen lock key, a voice commands key, a speakerphone key that also doubles as a zoom key in camera mode, and a camera key. The camera key activates the camcorder when held down. Also on the right side are the card slot and a 3.5mm headset jack, which are always welcome on a music phone. On the back of the handset is the camera lens, complete with a self-portrait mirror and a flash LED.
When you slide the phone to the right, you'll see a full four-row QWERTY keyboard. It is spacious with nice big keys that are raised above the surface for easy and responsive texting. We also really appreciate that the numbers and letters keys are separate. There are the typical shift and function keys here, as well as navigation arrows and an OK key for navigating the phone in landscape mode. Also note that the whole screen changes orientation from portrait to landscape mode when the keyboard is out, even the widget toolbar and shortcut icons.
The Rogue also has an internal accelerometer that changes the orientation of the screen depending on how you hold it. It does work with only certain applications, though, like the Web browser and the photo gallery.
Features
The Rogue has a 1,000-entry phone book, with room in each entry for five numbers, two e-mail addresses, an instant-messaging screen name, a street address, a birthday, and notes. You can also save your contacts to groups, add a photo for caller ID, or pair them with one of 22 (72-chord) polyphonic ringtones. Other basic features include a vibrate mode, a speakerphone, a calculator, a calendar, an alarm clock, a stop watch, a world clock, a notepad, a timer, and even a sketch pad, where you can draw doodles and then send them to friends. You also get voice commands, USB mass storage mode, a file viewer in which you can read office documents plus PDFs, and GPS with VZ Navigator support. It supports a wide array of Bluetooth profiles as well, like hands-free, A2DP streaming, file transfer, and more.
Appropriately for a messaging phone like the Rogue, you get a variety of messaging features as well. You can send text, picture, video, and voice messages, and they'll appear in your in-box as threaded conversations. You also get visual voice mail, mobile IM with AIM, Windows Live Messenger, and Yahoo messenger support, and three different e-mail options--mobile e-mail, corporate e-mail, and mobile Web e-mail. Mobile e-mail lets you get e-mail from services like Yahoo, AOL, and Windows Live directly to your in-box; corporate e-mail lets you sync your work e-mail and calendar via a RemoSync service. Do note that the visual voice mail costs $3 a month, the mobile -email application is $5, and the corporate e-mail option requires a $9.99 a month subscription.
Since the Rogue comes with EV-DO Rev. A, it supports all of Verizon's V Cast broadband services, likewhere you can watch streaming videos from a variety of content providers, and that lets you purchase and download songs over the air. Each song is $1.99, which includes a download to the PC as well. If you prefer to load your own songs to the Rogue, you can do so via a microSD card--it supports up to 16GB cards. The Rogue supports MP3, WMA, and unprotected AAC and AAC+ formats.
We're quite pleased with the music player overall. It's easy to use, and the songs are automatically categorized by albums, artists, and genres. You can set the songs to shuffle or repeat, and you can create and edit playlists on the fly. The interface is simple, with the album art in the center and the player controls underneath. You can also search through your songs with the included search tool. However, you can't multitask with the music player active in the background. There's also a video player on here that can play H.264-encoded videos.
Another application that benefits from the EV-DO Rev. A support is of course the full HTML Web browser. It was a pleasure to use, with smooth and easy scrolling plus the ability to zoom in and out of pages just by using the camera zoom controls at the top. However, we did notice that in more complex Web pages, scrolling can be a little sluggish. You can use the search function, add bookmarks, and set the page to fixed width if you like. We also like that you can copy and paste text in the browser. More advanced users will like the browser's newsfeed feature that you can customize with all your favorite newsfeeds. Perhaps more interesting is that the Rogue's HTML browser also supports a version of Flash Lite that lets you watch streaming videos from sources like YouTube and CNET TV.
We were definitely impressed with the Rogue's 3.0-megapixel camera photo was really good, with sharp edges and vibrant colors. The camera can take pictures in eight resolutions, from 2,048x1536 all the way to 320x240. You also get three quality settings, auto focus plus macro focus, an autoshot mode, a self-timer, an adjustable ISO of up to ISO 400, three metering options, and settings for brightness, contrast, saturation, and sharpness. Other camera goodies include a ready sound, five color effects, up to 10x digital zoom, three shutter sounds with a silent option, and five shooting modes (single shot, multishot, panorama shot, mosaic shot, and frame shot). Since there's a flash LED, you can of course enable flash as well.
The camcorder can record in two modes: one for saving and one for sending as a multimedia message. In MMS mode, you can record in 176x144 resolution only; in "save" mode, you can record in either 320x240 or 640x480 resolution. You can adjust the self-timer, the color effects, the white balance, the brightness, and the flash LED. We were quite pleased with the video quality overall, though it was choppy at times. Colors looked great and there was little blur. Video is good enough for sharing on YouTube or Facebook.
You can personalize the Rogue with a variety of graphics and sounds for wallpaper and ringtones. You can get more from Verizon's online store. The same goes if you ever want more games or applications. The Rogue comes with a few games already, like Need for Speed Undercover, Resident Evil: Degeneration, and Tetris. There's also a handy Dice application that substitutes for real dice if you're ever in need of them.
Performance
We the Samsung Rogue in San Francisco using the Verizon Wireless service. Call quality was very impressive overall. On our end, callers sounded great, with hardly any static or interference. They sounded natural, and the volume was good enough in most situations.
On the callers' side of things, they said we sounded really good. Some even said it was close to landline quality. They said our voice sounded natural, and they didn't hear too much noise in the background. Automated-calling systems had no trouble recognizing our voice.
As for the speakerphone, callers could still hear us loud and clear. The voice quality was no longer so natural, however, and had a bit more of a harsh tone. Still, it sounded great for the most part. On our end, we thought callers sounded good with plenty of volume, with perhaps a bit of a tinny undertone. The same goes with audio playback--overall sound quality was fine, but the lack of bass makes most songs sound a bit flat. We definitely recommend a headset for the best audio quality.
EV-DO Rev. A makes downloading songs and loading Web pages a breeze. We downloaded a 1.5MB song in just a little more than 30 seconds, and loading a complicated Web page like CNET's front door took around 10 seconds. Streaming video had a very short buffering time as well. Still, video quality wasn't that great. They looked very pixelated and blurry, especially when there's a lot of movement.
The Rogue has a rated battery of 4.7 hours talk time and 12.5 days standby time. Our tests showed the Rogue had a talk time of 4 hours and 49 minutes. According to FCC radiation tests, the Rogue has a of 1.36 watts per kilogram.
