Summary of the Nokia N97.

We could go on and on about how impressive the N97 is, but we think you've got the message! Plus, there are so many things to discover it would be a shame to spoil them! In the wake of the popularity of netbooks and more complex smartphones, the N97 is coming at a time when it will be most appreciated and not just by phone geeks either, its usability, versatility and style will appeal to many. Trust us, it's going to be absolutely huge!

  • The 3.5", 360x640 pixel resolution, 16:9 touchscreen capable of displaying 16 million colours.
  • A 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss lensed camera with dual-LED flash.
  • Built-in Assisted GPS and digital compass for precise locations within Nokia Maps.
  • A huge 32GB of internal memory, plus a MicroSD expansion slot, potentially taking it to 48GB!
  • Symbian S60 5th Edition is the operating system of choice.

we could just copy and paste the N97 specification sheet under the 'Why You Should Buy It' heading, as this phone contains so many neat touches and truly innovative features, that regardless of you mobile wishes, chances are the Nokia N97 will meet and exceed them! This wouldn't do the phone justice though, so we will highlight some of out favourite points to give you an idea of just what a marvel this is. For instance, the home screen is 'Internet-aware', which means any of the widgets you install - news, weather and social networking are amongst them – will update in the same way Push email does, with no prompting from you!

The N97 wants you to use the Internet, and to do so you'll use a WebKit browser which not only has an RSS reader but Flash support too. The N97 is also fully integrated with Ovi, your online home for files, maps, pictures, video and games, all ready to share with your friends. Sharing is another important area of the N97 and aside from the auto-updating social network widgets on the home screen, Nokia are introducing So-Lo – which stands for Social Location – for you to share your location with your friends.

Designed for the needs of Internet-savvy mobile phone users, the Nokia N97 will transform the way people connect to the Internet and to each other. It combines a large 3.5-inch touch display with a full QWERTY keyboard--which flips open at an angle for optimal viewing--providing an "always open" window to your favorite social networking sites and Internet destinations. And with integrated A-GPS sensors and an electronic compass, the device intuitively understands where it is, giving your the ability to update your status on social networks and instant messaging as well as share your location and related pictures or videos with approved friends.

To feed the N97's hunger for data is a 3G/HSDPA connection with Wi-Fi too, plus the usual GPRS, EDGE and A2DP Bluetooth. The GPS receiver is an Assisted model, plus the phone comes pre-loaded with Nokia Maps 2.0, nicely tweaked for touch usage. With a screen as gorgeous as this, video will look fantastic and there is a music player, FM RDS radio and FM transmitter rounding out the multimedia side, plus a TV-out and 3.

5mm jack plug connection.

However, the Nokia is not just another touchscreen-only powerhouse, as the N97 takes its tag of 'mobile computer' very seriously, as by gently nudgin

g the screen, it will slide out and reveal a full QWERTY keyboard! The build quality is superb too, evidenced by the slick motion with which the keyboard comes into view and the sturdy 150 gram weight.

With A-GPS functionality, you'll be able find your route quickly and easily, whether walking or driving (A-GPS is a network dependent feature that requires a data plan; additional charges may apply). The Nokia Maps application offers richer maps with urban details and satellite views and the ability to search and download information about points of interests, such as restaurants, hotels, companies, travel agencies, airports, and more. Let the built-in compass keep you pointing in the right direction--the map adapts to point the same way you do. Use the Walk pedestrian navigation to find your way, or the voice-guided Drive navigation to find the best route. The Nokia N97 comes with a three-month Walk and Drive navigation license.

No doubt, the Nokia N97 is one of the best built N-Series device we’ve seen so far. However, there are still some issues with the built quality and the materials which should be fixed as soon as possible. These issues I talk about occur only in some versions of the white N97. Nokia have been offering white variants on many handsets and it has become a more appealing option for many consumers as it looks quite classy and different. However, does this eye candy come at a price? I really recommend anyone in the market for any new device with these color variants, especially the N97 and the N86, to hop on and read this article before making a decision.

The back has also changed from its original white colour and is now rather yellow. This isn’t that noticeable but if you hold a brand new N97 next to a used N97 you will see the difference. The materials used have been well thought out, and the choice of a non-glossy back cover is something I am a fan of, however this will now pose new challenges for hardware developers and black might just be the safest option for the time being. Furthermore, Jay from My Nokia Blog mentions how dust and dirt is more visible on the device despite cleaning it. However I personally haven’t noticed this yet.

More over, there are some problems which may also affect the black version. These are specific hardware problems I had with the N97. Some users of the white N97 also have had the same problems, others don’t. It seems that there are different versions of the white Nokia N97.

The battery cover, next to the slide-lock, is a little bit loose and not as tight as it should be. You really can feel/hear it when pressing the battery cover slightly down. This is really annoying for me.

The Nokia N97 White is a phone which provides everything a phone in today's market should provide. If it is not in the specification list of this phone, it either hasn't been invented or is redundant and not worth including. Its stylish looks are impressive enough, but delve into its inner sanctum and a plethora of functions await within, to tempt and keep anyone amused for hours.

The phones main component, which happens to take up most of the front panel of the phone, is the 3.5 inch TFT resistive touch screen. A multitude of sensors provide benefits to the user and automate various tasks. The accelerometer sensor provides the means to alter the aspect of images automatically. The proximity sensor provides the ability to automatically shut down the unit to conserve battery life and increase its longevity. As far as data entry is concerned, there are several methods, a full QWERTY keyboard is provided as well as the ability to recognise and use handwriting directly onto the screen.

The 5 mega pixel camera built in to the phone offers autofocus, LED flash and includes high specification optics by Carl Zeiss. The camera has a resolution of 2592 x 1944 also provides video capture and playback at VGA quality video and at 30 frames per second. The phone also comes with a secondary camera which provides alternative means of image capture. Internal memory on this phone is an astounding 32 Gb which is suitably large to hold copious amounts of media

Internet access is provided by the HSDPA and WI-Fi connections which coupled with the large display screen makes web browsing impressive and enjoyable. The phone also comes with an MP3 player and an FM radio for listening to local and national radio stations. GPS with A-GPS support and Nokia maps is integrated into the phone for satellite navigation. The phone also utilises the ARM 11 434 MHz processor for stable and efficient processing with the benefit of the Symbian v9.4 operating system, which has been shown to be an effective and able stable mate.

The phone is a white colour variant of the N97 and offers the same outstanding features and functions that its sibling provides. The phone is a technologically advanced mobile phone which offers excellent value for money and provides everything a user could want in a phone.
